Education
We focus on hands-on field and laboratory experiences, blended with face-to-face lecturing and tutorials and online resources, across the Cairns and Townsville campuses. If you are interested in science, sustainability, the environment or geography, then this is the field of study for you. You can specialize in Land and Water Science by enrolling in JCU’s Bachelor of Science majoring in Earth Science, Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management (Land and Water Management major), Graduate Diploma of Science majoring in Environmental Earth Science or Master of Science majoring in Environmental Earth Science. Alternatively, if you are specializing in Ecology, Planning, Marine Science, Education, Geology or Engineering, then you can take our subjects (or ‘courses’ or ‘modules’, depending on where you’re from) as highly relevant electives. |
Our main teaching is in the Subjects listed below. These subjects can be taken as part of a JCU degree, or individually, or externally and credited towards a degree in another institution.
- Environmental Processes and Global Change (EV1005)
- Evolution of the Earth (EA1110)
- Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (EV2502, EV5505)
- Advanced Geographic Information Systems (EV3502, EV5502)
- Remote Sensing (EV3506, EV5506)
- Hydrology (EA2006, EA5016)
- Advanced Hydrology (EA3008, EA5090)
- Soil Properties and Processes (EA2007, EA3207, EA5017)
- Australian Landscape Processes and Evolution (EV2401)
- Coastal and Catchment Geomorphology (EV3401, EV5401)
- Natural Hazards (EV3454, EV5454)
- Coral Reef Geomorphology (EV3406, EV5406)
- Field Studies in Tropical Land and Water Science (EA3007, EA5018)
- Honours project (SC4001 + SC4002)

Student Comments
EA1110 (2016) The knowledge of the subject was to be a foundation of many more to come, and this course stimulated my learning for future subjects
EA1110 (2016) (The best aspect was …) Being able to observe what we were learning about in the lab (rocks and fossils) as well as in the natural environment on field trips. EA1110 (2015)The field trips and practical sessions were helpful and challenging. I have learnt much but can also see how little I know and would like to understand in relation to the evolutionary processes of the earth. EV1005 (2016) The lecturers were always approachable when you had a question or couldn't understand part of a practical, they would help lead you to the answer by helping you understand questions and the concepts. EV2007/5017 (2016) This is the most well planned and executed subject I have done at JCU. Practicals are constantly relevant and actually 'practical' ... Clear and well thought out. EV2401 (2017) ...thank you all for the amazing camping trip. I learnt so much and appreciate everything you all did. The whole weekend was so organised and I was able to understand many things... EV2502/5505 (2016) I just wanted to say that I've really enjoyed this class thus far. JCU does a better job organizing this subject in comparison to what my home university has to offer. Back home it's all lecture and theory. At JCU, there is an excellent incorporation of technology, software, methods, theory, and application. This class makes my study abroad academic experiences unique and worthwhile. EV3506/5506 (2016) This is one of my favourite subjects thus far!! Very productive, hands on learning! WELL DONE, would recommend this to anyone in science of any field. |
